Home Security for the Garage Door

In the pursuit of a safer home, the number of people choosing to have a home security system installed has skyrocketed.  With security systems being more affordable than ever before and new technologies introduced, an alarm system to protect family and property is a viable solution.  Typically, security systems provide coverage for the home's windows and doors, which stops intruders from getting inside but unfortunately, the garage is sometimes overlooked, especially in the case of attached garages.

The truth is that garage doors can be vulnerable for home invasion, which is why anyone considering a home security system should also make sure these doors are covered.  In most cases, a home intruder will spend less than one minute checking out a home to determine if it would be a good hit due to easy break-in opportunities.  For that reason, it is important that a person have the right home security system installed.  With this, a burglar would quickly realize there were too many obstacles, thus moving on to another property, one that would make a better target.

Specific to security of garage doors, homeowners can do a number of things to include:

* Have the home security system installed so it provides coverage on the garage doors, windows, and doors leading into the garage from the home

* Install deadbolts on interior doors that lead into the attached garage

* Upgrade outdated garage door openers to systems that use the rolling code technology, which are keyless entry systems that use a wide-spread algorithm for the security code

*  Place a padlock through the garage track above the rollers when going out of town

* Use slide bars on garage windows

* Store ladders, 50-gallon drums, and riding lawn mowers in a safe place so an intruder would not have tools for gaining entry

Just as a homeowner has valuables on the inside of the home, the garage is also a great place for a treasure hunt where bikes, cars, tools, and other expensive items are stored.  Therefore, home security needs to also cover the garage.  If garage doors have windows or if there are standard windows within the garage itself, these should be covered with one-way dark film so the homeowner could see out but a burglar could not see in.  This way, the intruder would not be able to determine the exact items inside.

Even the condition of the garage doors would either provide protection or create a means for an intruder to enter.  Homeowners should inspect the doors, looking for damaged corners or loose panels that could easily be pried open by a pro.  The locks on the doors should also be in good working order, even if a high-tech garage door opener were used.

Finally, good sensor lighting over the garage is a great deterrent.  In addition to stopping a burglar from trying to get inside, sensor lights provide another layer of protection for the homeowner when he or she returns home by illuminating the area.  A reputable home security company can conduct an analysis on a person's home to include the garage to determine the type of alarm system needed.  The outcome would be a homeowner with better peace of mind, knowing loved ones and prized possessions are safe.
